About Nantong
China's pioneering modern city shaped by industrialist Zhang Jian at the Yangtze mouth, circling the Hao River moat with the Langshan hills rising by the sea.
Top Attractions
Langshan Scenic Area
"The First Mountain by River and Sea" on the north bank of the Yangtze estuary, one of China's Eight Lesser Buddhist Mountains. Guangjiao Temple crowns the 107-meter hill, river ferries and sea breezes frame the climb, and the multi-hill combo ticket links Jianshan, Junshan and Huangnishan nearby.
Hao River Scenic Area
The ancient moat encircling Nantong's old town in an inverted-gourd loop, nicknamed the "Jade Necklace of the River City." The banks are free day and night; evening cruises (about 60–80 CNY) drift past museums, pavilions and lit bridges — the classic way to see the modern city Zhang Jian built.
Yuantuojiao Resort
The headland at the mouth of the Yangtze — the first place in Jiangsu to see the sunrise — inside a national resort zone in Qidong. Golden Beach (about 25 CNY) adds mudflat walks and a Dawu statue; free to enter the resort, best at dawn when river and sea meet.
Xiaoyangkou Scenic Area
The core scenic zone of a national resort area in Rudong County, famous for its "sea disco" — barefoot dancing on tidal flats while digging for clams — a one-of-a-kind coastal experience shaped by daily tides on the Yellow Sea.
Nantong Forest Safari Park
A 3,000-mu forest safari in Xingfu subdistrict, among Jiangsu's top-rated family attractions. Safari trains and drive lanes pass giraffes, pandas and white lions; the park adds amusement rides, circus shows and summer night sessions that run to 21:00. Regular hours 9:00-17:00; adult tickets from about CNY 180.
Nantong Museum
Founded in 1905 by industrialist Zhang Jian as China's first public museum, set in its own garden by the Hao River. Grounds open 06:00–18:00, halls 09:00–17:00 (closed Mondays) with free real-name booking — a landmark of Chinese museum history and of Zhang Jian's modernizing vision.
Red 14th Army Memorial Hall
Within Rugao's martyrs cemetery, this free memorial honors the Red 14th Army, founded here in 1930 as the only regular Red Army force on central Party rosters active in Jiangsu during the agrarian revolution. Halls with a forecourt, shrine and gallery display its history and local martyrs' stories; open Tuesday-Sunday mornings and afternoons, closed Mondays.
Central Jiangsu Seven Victories Memorial Hall
Built in 1986 and opened in 1988 beside Hai'an's Yangtze Middle Road, this free museum commemorates the 1946 Central Jiangsu Campaign in which Su Yu and Tan Zhenlin led 30,000 troops to seven victories over 120,000 in forty-five days. A needle-shaped monument, exhibition hall, national-defence park and plaza frame the story; open mornings and afternoons, midday closure.
